The words “filled with antioxidants” line the shelves of food products in grocery stores. But, why should you care?

Antioxidants are powerful substances in foods that help to protect our bodies from disease causing agents. Exposure to things like pollution, cigarette smoke, stress, and excessive sunlight cause substances called free radicals to form in our bodies. Free radicals are highly unstable particles that, in the body, can contribute to heart disease, cancer, and other diseases. Antioxidants help the body to get rid of these disease-causing agents.

By focusing on the right foods, you can make sure you’re protected from these free radicals; thus, decreasing your risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Consuming your 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables is very important, as they are rich in antioxidants. To further increase your antioxidant intake, there are many foods you can consume that are excellent sources, including:

· Red Grapes

· Berries: blueberries are the best source, but all berries are very high in antioxidants

· Hot Tea: green tea has the most, but black and oolong tea are great sources too; it is important to be sure that your tea is steeped for at least five minutes, so that most of the antioxidants will be released

· Coffee

· Dark Chocolate

The benefits of antioxidants are astounding, so put your soda down and drink a cup of green tea instead! Help yourself to live a healthier and longer life, by making sure antioxidants are a part of your diet!
