Love Your Heart, Love Your Body, February is the Month of Love!

American Heart Month takes place throughout the month of February and is sponsored by the American Heart Association. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women throughout the United States. In fact, one in four deaths are related to heart disease. Fortunately, heart disease is strongly correlated to diet and exercise. As college students, the American Heart Association recommends we get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity at least five times a week. This can be done by riding your bike to class, or walking around the Drillfield. Finally, if you smoke… STOP! Smoking increasing your chance of developing heart disease by 30%.

Whether you have a significant other or not, celebrate Valentine’s Day and reward yourself on February 14th with a piece of dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains flavonoids that can help lower your cholesterol, decrease your chance of developing blood clots and improve your mood by raising serotonin levels in the brain. Lastly, be sure you celebrate the Great American Pizza Bake during the 2nd week of February. Much to your surprise, pizza can be healthy. In fact, it can even include all four food groups. Whether ordering pizza at a Dining Center or preparing one at home, select a pizza with a whole wheat crust, low-fat cheese and loaded with vegetables and a lean protein source.
