Gobble Gobble it’s November!

Nearly 371 million people in the United States suffer from diabetes. Diabetes comes in two forms, Type I and Type II. Type I diabetes is typically diagnosed in childhood and occurs when the body doesn’t produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the uptake and storage of glucose into the body’s cells. On the other hand, type II diabetes is strongly correlated to diet and exercise and occurs when the body cannot use insulin properly because it has built up an insulin resistance. The American Diabetes Association helps raise awareness to this disease by naming November as American Diabetes Month. During this month, commit to living a healthy and active life and decrease your risk of developing type II diabetes. One of the ways you can do this is by participating in Take a Hike Day on November 17th. Sponsored by the American Hiking Association, grab a friend and enjoy one of the numerous hikes Blacksburg, VA has to offer. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, you can enjoy a half day hike to the Cascades waterfall or a whole day hike to McAfee’s Knob. Hiking is a great way to exercise different muscle groups, explore the outdoors and breathe in fresh mountain air.
